How can I tell if it’s raccoons and not squirrels in my attic?
Timing and volume are the biggest tells. Raccoons are mostly nocturnal (with some dawn/dusk activity), so loud thumping or heavy movement after dark points to raccoons rather than squirrels, which are active during the day. Raccoons are also much bigger than squirrels, so the noise tends to sound like something walking rather than scurrying, and you’re more likely to find torn insulation, overturned trash cans outside, or a stronger odor.
Are raccoons actually dangerous, or is that overstated?
It’s not overstated. Raccoons are one of the species Texas health authorities classify as a rabies vector species, alongside skunks, foxes, and coyotes, because they’re a documented reservoir for the virus — Texas Department of State Health Services rabies surveillance consistently shows raccoons among the top species testing positive each year. That real regulatory classification is exactly why raccoon removal isn’t a do-it-yourself project.
Can I just trap a raccoon myself and relocate it?
Not legally, in most cases. Texas rabies-control law makes it illegal for anyone other than a TPWD-authorized nuisance wildlife permit holder or a licensed pest control professional to transport a live raccoon, fox, skunk, or coyote — doing so is a Class C misdemeanor. Animals in this category that are trapped must either be quarantined for four weeks to rule out rabies or be euthanized on site; they can’t simply be caught and released the way a lot of people assume, which is exactly why this work needs a licensed operator.
I see a raccoon out during the daytime — does that mean it’s rabid?
Not necessarily. Healthy raccoons — especially nursing mothers with kits to feed — will often forage during the day when they need extra food, so daytime activity alone isn’t a reliable rabies indicator. What’s actually worth watching for is abnormal behavior: stumbling, disorientation, unprovoked aggression, or an animal that seems unaware of your presence. If you see that, keep your distance and don’t try to handle it yourself.
What time of year are raccoon problems in attics worst?
Spring, when female raccoons look for a warm, sheltered place to den and raise kits — and attics fit that description well. Kits typically need six to eight weeks before they’re mobile enough to follow their mother out, which is why removal is timed around the litter rather than sealing an entry point the moment adult activity is spotted.
What kind of damage do raccoons typically leave behind?
Because they’re strong and dexterous, raccoons tend to cause more structural damage than smaller wildlife — torn roof vents, pulled-back fascia and soffit, and insulation flattened or torn apart for denning material. Droppings and urine can also contaminate insulation and drywall, which is why a raccoon problem needs the affected space cleaned and sanitized and the entry point sealed, not just the raccoon trapped.
